So, if you’d like to give your outdoor space a budget-friendly makeover in the near future, keep reading for inspiration.

Nourish your garden soil after the winter

Cold, damp weather during the winter can take its toll on your soil's health. Due to this, it’s worth conditioning the soil in spring to increase its nutrients prior to planting. Give your garden beds an initial tidy up by removing dead plants and fallen leaves. Then spread a 2-3 inch layer of compost on top of the soil, before folding it in with a garden fork to combine the two. And if you’re going to plant flowers in pots, ensure you use new compost to limit the risk of disease.

At Oxford Garden Centre, we stock a range of options, like Melcourt’s Peat Free Multipurpose Compost with slow-release fertilisers. This is ideal for improving soil quality and aiding seed and plant growth in pots and borders. Better still, our 40L bags are now 5 for the price of 4!

Alternatively, you could opt for one of our bestselling manure products. While it may not sound overly appealing, farmyard manure is an excellent source of nutrients for flowers, vegetables and more. And roses thrive especially well in it! Order 3 bags of Westland Gro-Sure Farmyard Manure for the price of 2 this Easter. Or get a free bag of Woodland Horse Manure with every 4 you buy. Whichever you choose, you can expect increased crop yields and beautiful blooms!

Add colour by planting new flowers and shrubs

On that note, if you’re looking for some new bedding plants or plug plants for potting on, why not call in to see us? You’ll find a huge display of spring favourites on display at our Oxford store, including pansies, primroses and crocuses. Plus geraniums and lavender for creating vibrant herbaceous borders, and various seeds, shrubs, herbs, trees and indoor house plants.

Need some new pots to plant them in? Our ever-popular Apta Himalaya collection includes hand-thrown terracotta pots in several shapes and sizes, starting from just £7.49. Or you might prefer our traditional JC lead-effect planters which are ideal for larger shrubs, and sturdy yet lightweight. On top of that, both ranges offer excellent frost resistance for year round use.

Once planted, we’d recommend mulching around your potted and border plants. This will help to retain moisture and suppress weed growth, whilst disguising the bare soil for a neater finish. And if you go for organic mulch, it will slowly degrade over time and enrich the soil. The rustic Westland Landscaping Bark is particularly popular right now and costs just £9.99 per bale!

Try your hand at growing your own vegetables

Alongside planting flowers, how about incorporating edibles into your garden? You could even get the kids involved during the holidays! Our garden centre has numerous vegetable plants and seeds to browse, including hardy cold season options like carrots, beetroot and cauliflower. Or with the weather warming up, you could opt for salad essentials like lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes.

To ensure best results, we also supply handy growbags to help regulate temperature and create the perfect growing conditions. These can be placed practically anywhere, from greenhouses to raised beds and even on patios – perfect if you’re short on space.

Grow bags and VegTrugs are a great option from growing vegetables on a small scale

Our Westland Medium Growbags contain a rich potash formula that feeds up to three plants. Meanwhile, Westland’s Big Tom Tomato Planter bags are infused with seaweed to cultivate healthier tomatoes. On a slightly larger scale, our 1m and 1.8m wide VegTrug’s are perfect for growing veg and herbs on a patio or in a courtyard garden. Why not give them a try? The whole family will enjoy watching them grow – not to mention tucking into the finished products!

Enhance your garden’s appeal with decorative elements

Attractive lead effect garden wall fountain

Want to add a focal point to your outdoor space and just a touch of sophistication? Then we have just the thing. Our recently updated range of water features includes everything from classic wall fountains to contemporary feature waterfalls. And each one will make your garden feel more tranquil and attract more wildlife for minimal cost, even if you live in an urban area.

La Hacienda Brava Fire Pit

A centrepiece fire pit is another great decorative option for sprucing up simple gardens and patios. The heat output will create a more cosy and inviting atmosphere on cooler evenings. While the low-level light they produce means you can entertain guests outdoors for longer. Explore our full range of gas heaters and wood-burning fire pits online, with options to suit every budget. And some even come with their own grill rack!

Upgrade your BBQ and/or patio set ready for lighter nights

However, if you’re serious about cooking outdoors, then you should definitely take a look at our extensive BBQ collection. Our traditional Weber charcoal kettle models start from just £119.99, are built to last and extremely easy to clean. In addition, we have several affordable portable models which are ideal for smaller grilling sessions – and can also be packed up for trips. Or you could upgrade to a gas BBQ for less than £300 and enjoy greater efficiency.
